HWJC has grown because its members want more. They want to grab the opportunities that a growing, modern, orthodox congregation can give them. And nowhere is this more apparent than in the field of adult education.
It was not that long ago that Jewish education for men stopped at 13. Jewish education for women was often non – existent. Now we have men and women in their twenties and thirties mixing with people in their autumn years getting the Jewish education they never had or brushing up on skills long forgotten.
At HWJC there is a regular adult Hebrew reading group in its third year where we go through the seasons and holidays and practise our reading in an informal atmosphere in members’ houses. There are regular specific talks by Rabbi Yoni on topics of interest to the community, such as Judaism & Modernity, A History of Inclusivity in Judaism and Jewish Perspectives on Christianity & Islam. We have a weekly women's study group, our own Jewish Film Festival, regular well known guest speakers and hands-on classes.
All educational activities are carefully pitched at the right level for the audience - after all, not everyone wants to be a Rabbi!
