10 December 2012: HWJC Elected a member of united synagogue
The Hadley Wood Jewish Community is thrilled to announce that is has become a full member of the United Synagogue.
Seventeen years ago, under the auspices of Cockfosters and N Southgate Synagogue, the community with a handful of members started holding Friday night services which then progressed to fortnightly Shabbat services at the home of one of our founder members and President of the United Synagogue, Steve Pack. Encouraged by Rabbi Yisrael Fine of Cockfosters and N Southgate Synagogue the community moved to weekly services, and ten years ago bought our own building in the heart of Hadley Wood.
The community has its own Cheder, offers adult education, has it’s own support network “Awareness” for those in distress and has an active social and cultural committee. Driven by our own dynamic Rabbi Yoni Birnbaum and his multi talented wife Elisheva there is hardly an evening without some event in the Shul. Our next major trip will be a visit to Prague in April 2013.
Full membership of the United Synagogue is the culmination of objectives set seventeen years ago, following Rabbi Fine’s advice for us to “take a leap of faith.” With close to one hundred families now members of the Hadley Wood Community the membership of the United Synagogue will drive our next “leap” forward.
The Chairman of The Hadley Wood Jewish Community comments “I’m delighted that our small local Shul has receive formal recognition from the US. Hadley Wood Jewish Community has a wonderful combination of community, friendship and support which I am proud to be part of.”
Rabbi Yoni Birnbaum adds ‘This is a tremendously exciting moment in the development of our warm and fast-growing community, and one which I feel privileged to be a part of. As full constituent members of the United Synagogue family, we look forward to the Hadley Wood Jewish Community going from strength to strength in the years to come.’
