Rabbi Yoni Birnbaum LLB (Hons) MA joined the Hadley Wood community in April 2010. He grew up in Kingsbury, London and is an alumnus of the world-renowned Gateshead and Ponovezh Yeshivot. He received his semicha from the Chief Rabbinate of Israel as well as completing advanced rabbinical training with the Ner L’Elef Institute in Jerusalem.
He holds a law degree from the Open University, graduating with First Class Honours, as well as an MA with Distinction in Jewish Studies from University College, London, where he is currently studying for a PhD on the interface between inclusivism and Orthodox Judaism. In addition, he sits on the Rabbinical Council of the United Synagogue, is a member of the Associate Faculty of the London School of Jewish Studies and writes the Jewish Chronicle’s ‘View From The Pulpit’ column. His forthcoming book, ‘Challenge and Continuity’ (published by Vallentine Mitchell), examines rabbinic responses to modernity, science and tragedy, and he is a regular contributor to local and national media.
Rabbi Birnbaum is married to Elisheva BSc (Hons) MAR, who combines her communal duties as Rebbetzin with her professional work as a paediatric occupational therapist in private practice.
They have five children, Nechama, Shimi, Tobi, Sara and Ayala, and in their spare time they all enjoy exploring the Hadley Wood countryside together.
